As Austronesian settlers spread through Indonesia, they encountered local groups with Papuan genetic ancestry and intermarried with them over time. Sex biases in this admixture process are revealed by looking at the extent of Austronesian (Asian) ancestry on the sex-linked mitochondrial DNA, Y chromosome and X chromosome, as well as the autosomes.
